The Jug & Bottle now has its very own beer called Old School ale. It is brewed by Brown Cower Brewery based at Barlow, North Yorkshire. Old School Ale is a light beer at 4.2% It has a light hop with a bitter edge and is very easy drinking. More beers will be added to this range for Christmas 2008.

The Jug and Bottle offers beer and lager in many formats; draught, bottled, chilled cans and chilled bottles.

There is a wide range on offer in the shop. Individual drinks are not always listed as stock varies all the time.

Please note that I CANNOT mail order beer. However, if you live in the York and London area there is a possibility of delivery.

Draught Beers

The abv of draught beer is always 4.3% or above. Jugs are available to purchase at the shop and come in two sizes; 4 pint and 8 pint. The beer is sold by the full pint into either of these containers. (Being an off-licence you can only sample the beer before purchase).

Timothy Taylors' Landlord is always on draught, however Ram Tam is very occassionally on during the winter months as an excellent substitute. There is always a minimum of one other draught beer on at all times, sometimes two or three during certains times of the year. Previous National guest beers are; Festival Mild 4.8% from Gales, Burton Porter 4.5% from Burton Bridge and Gold 5% from Iceni. Previous local beers served are from Brown Cow at Barlow, Selby such as How Now 4.5% & Yankee 4.3% from Roosters at Harrogate.

Other regular breweries used are: Ossett & Salamander from West Yorkshire, and Archers from Swindon. However customers do like a wide choice of beer and enjoy the variety offered at The Jug and Bottle. Over the Christmas period of 2005 they were treated to the following: Youngs ~ Winter Warmer 5%, Christmas Pudding Ale ~ Coach House 4.4%, Good King Legless ~ Harviestoun 4.5%, Yule Fuel ~ Hambletons 4.5%, Rosy Nosey ~ Batemans 4.9%. Good Elf ~ Thwaites 4.9%, Abbott Ale ~ Greene King 5%.


Bottled Beer (British & Abroad).

Since The Jug and Bottle was established in 2002 over 500 different British bottled beers have been on sale. There are always over 100 bottles on sale at any one time for you to choose from.

There are always regulars such as Landlord, Old Peculiar, Strong Suffolk, JHB, Abbott, Speckled Hen, Old Thumper and various ones from Brown Cow.

Others beers in stock or that have been stocked are from Breweries such as Bartrums, Acorn, Badger, Cairngorm, Copper Dagon, Croptin, Daleside, Feinfoel, Freeminer, Hambletons, Hawkshead, Hogs Back, Iceni, Arran, Kelham Island, Malton, Moorhouse, Old Bear, Orkney, Otter, Rudgate, Skinners, St Austell, Smiles, St Peters, Teme Valley, Thornbridge, Tirril, Titantic, Ventnor, Wentworth, Wharfedale, White Star, Wickwar, Wold Top.

95% of the bottle beers stocked cannot be found in supermarkets.

There are a variety of German and Belguim beers stocked such as La Chouffe, Duvel, Orval, Chimay, Lucifer & Schneider Weiss. The abv ranges from 3% to 12% abv. Some are bottle conditioned.

Bottled Lager

A dozen lagers are housed in the fridge, ready chilled. These range from China, India, Mexico, Spain and France ~ Desperados has recently been very popular. A few canned lagers and bitters are available; pint sized Stella, as well as Kronenbourg and Boddingtons.
